Description
Linn Karousel Bearing Kit
The Karousel is the main bearing currently fitted to every LP12 in production — including the Klimax — and it is also available as a retrofit upgrade for any existing LP12 Sondek. Linn introduced the Karousel in 2020 as a clean-sheet redesign of the bearing that has sat at the heart of the LP12 since 1972, applying decades of accumulated manufacturing knowledge and modern material science to a component that was already very good.
The result is audibly better. If your LP12 has an original Linn bearing — or any bearing predating the Karousel — this is one of the most substantive upgrades available to you.
What the Bearing Does
The main bearing carries the LP12’s platter. The spindle rotates within it on a single point of contact at the base — this is the thrust pad — while the shaft is guided by the bearing housing above. The quality of that interaction determines how cleanly the platter rotates, and how much mechanical noise enters the sub-chassis and ultimately the cartridge.
Any friction, play, or vibration in the bearing is transmitted directly into the replay chain. The LP12’s cartridge, sitting in the headshell of the tonearm a few inches away, is exquisitely sensitive to structure-borne vibration. A noisier, less precisely controlled bearing raises the noise floor of the entire replay system.

What Karousel Changes
Linn made three significant improvements in the Karousel design.
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on the spindle tip. DLC is an exceptionally hard, low-friction surface treatment used in precision engineering applications. Applied to the spindle tip — the point at which the spindle contacts the thrust pad — it dramatically reduces friction at this critical interface. Lower friction means less vibration, less heat, and a longer component lifespan.
Stainless steel housing with a substantial lock-nut. The Karousel housing is machined from stainless steel rather than the previous brass, and is secured to the LP12’s sub-chassis with a more substantial lock-nut. The result is greater rigidity at the critical junction where the bearing meets the sub-chassis. Any compliance at this joint allows micro-movement that adds noise; the Karousel minimises it.
Strengthened thrust pad and housing. The thrust pad — the component at the base of the bearing on which the spindle tip rests — has been redesigned with a stronger housing and a stiffer, coated surface. This more effectively supports the rotating mass of the platter, reducing vertical movement and improving stability under the varying dynamic loads that a playing record imposes.
Compatibility
The Karousel fits any LP12. There are a small number of compatibility notes worth knowing: it cannot be used alongside a Valhalla or Wakonda power supply fitted internally in the deck, and some older outer platters may need replacement to match the current inner platter specification. We will confirm compatibility for your specific deck when you get in touch.
The Karousel is fitted as standard to every new LP12. If you bought an LP12 before 2020, the Karousel is a significant upgrade that brings your deck’s most fundamental rotating component up to the current production standard.
The Linn Karousel Bearing Kit is engineered for professional installation only and cannot be purchased online.
To achieve its full performance potential, this precision bearing kit must be expertly installed and calibrated by our trained and certified Linn engineers.
Professional calibration ensures perfect alignment, optimal tracking, and seamless integration with your turntable and cartridge.

About Linn

Linn was founded in 1973 by Ivor Tiefenbrun. At that time, Ivor was dissatisfied with the performance of the Hi-Fi system he had just purchased after getting married.
He used the resources at his father’s engineering company to fix what he thought was wrong with the design of the system and it was then that the Sondek LP12 turntable was born.
This turntable is regarded as the most popular high-end turntable of all time. Linn has received worldwide acclaim for its quality products including the Royal Warrant award in 2002 and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in 2012.
